Very impressive list! Thank you very much.
ReplyDeleteGood! Uhm... And Furtwangler, no?
ReplyDeleteGood question about Furtwängler. And you might ask the same about Toscanini, Felix Weingartner, Erich Kleiber, etc. The reason I didn't include them and a hundred other early conductors is that I tried to limit my selections to good-sounding stereo recordings. I didn't want readers complaining that on my recommendation they had just unknowingly bought a scratchy old 1935 disc in mono. And I didn't want to put warning labels next to anything. So, yes, the recommendations come mainly from the stereo age of home playback, around 1954-on, with only a couple of exceptions for things that just missed by a year or two.
ReplyDeleteJohn
Nice list. It depresses me a bit since I'm not much for orchestral music, more a chamber/solo fan. That said... What about Bernstein's Sibelus symphonies? Just curious what you think (and feel).
ReplyDeleteFranz Lehar? While I don't doubt there is some merit there, having never heard the music, it's inconceivable that his music holds a candle to the Bach suites for solo cello and violin. That music is transcendent, so deeply spiritual.
Thanks for the feedback, Audentity. As for the choice of genre covered, most of it is orchestral music, true, because I had to limit it to something manageable and chose the most-popular area over the years. As for Bernstein's Sibelius, I didn't care overmuch for his later DG recordings with the VPO, except maybe for the First Symphony, which I should really add now that you have kindly reminded me of it. I did like his early New York recordings a little more, but when I first heard them on Columbia LPs, I didn't care at all for the sound. His Fifth impressed me, though, and I'm sure Sony has remastered it to something closer to the original tapes.
ReplyDeleteA stimulating list. I wish I had heard as many different recordings of such a wide repertoire. One area in which I do have many alternative versions is Shostakovich, and I wonder if you've heard the Sanderling/Cleveland recording originally on Erato? It's my favorite by far. I also have a lot of Sibelius--34 Sibelius 4ths and counting--and I was glad to see you liked Karajan's EMI recording: it's the one that hooked me. One final recommendation--where I don't have as much depth in alternative versions--George Szell's recording of Siegfried's Funeral Music for CBS seems to me to be one of the greatest recordings of it. Maybe it was the multi-miking, but the pulse in the strings below the big climaxes added a whole new level of tension to the piece.
ReplyDeleteKeep up the listening and reviewing!
I've not heard the Sanderling Shostakovich recordings. I heard one of Szell's Wagner orchestral recordings years ago on LP, but nothing on CD. I'll have to play catch up here.
ReplyDeleteHi: I believe the soprano in the Klemperer Flying Dutchman is Anja Silja. Thanks.

Quite a wonderful list, John. But absent is R. Strauss's "Vier Letzte Lieder" - one of my all-time favorites. The Schwarzkopf/Szell with the Berlin Radio-Symphonie CD on EMI is one I'd highly recommend.
